Lunatic farmer and Jersey hospitality

four things from my world..

Hey all 👋

Four things from my world…

1. On Fatherhood (as a rookie): Been a while since I was interviewed on a podcast but I recently made a new friend and went on the Dad Awesome podcast to talk about fatherhood.

We talked about basic advice for new dads (get around other dads who are trying to be excellent fathers), foster care, practices for a healthy relationship with technology, the importance of asking “What’s the goal of fatherhood?” and why each kid might need different parenting approaches.

There have also been WAY smarter guests on the podcast than me, but feel free to give my episode a listen here.

2. Parents as Quarterbacks: My friend has 7 kids. They homeschool. He recently shared something about their mindset when it comes to education and I found it to be quite helpful.

People often ask us how and why we decided to homeschool - and we understand that homeschooling is not for everyone, but no matter what route you choose for your children's education, you should think about yourselves as the headmasters or quarterbacks of your kids’ education.

You can “hire” whoever you want to help with it - public school, private schools, tutors, friends, etc. In other words, you can delegate some of the actual work of educating your kids, but you can't delegate the responsibility. That's something we should be stewarding as parents.

3. Lunatic Farmer: A few weeks ago, Dana and I finally watched a documentary she's been wanting to see for a while called Lunatic Farmer (preview here). It's about this guy named Joel who owns a family farm in Virginia. CRAZY story. So inspiring. The general idea is that when we work with the way that God created the world, animals, crops and people flourish. And when we go against the grain (much of today’s industrial farming), we get splinters (aka disease). If you are into farming or homesteading at all, you will LOVE this. And even if you're not into that stuff, I be you will be after watching.

4. Jersey Hospitality: We have a college student from Indiana living with us for the next three months. She’s interning at a hospital in New Brunswick and needed a place to stay. She reached out to some churches in the area, ours included. That message got sent to Dana, and we decided we were totally in. If you've been subscribed here, you know that one of our family’s core values is hospitality. So we're excited for the opportunity to do this together as a family. More is caught than taught.

In her first week ever in NJ, we introduced her to pork roll, jersey bagels and the beach. Needless to say, she loves it here 😉

Until next time,

Kieran
